Raja (Anil Kapoor) hails from a middle class family who falls in love with Rekha (Madhuri Dixit). Her mother, Durgeshwari (Hema Malini) a totally dominating character is against the match. With the fear of losing her daughter if she protests too much, she gives them permission to marry but fays a condition for Raja to move in with them rather than follow the custom of sending her daughter to his house after marriage. She expects him to refuse. To her dismay he agrees to shift into their palatial house. She then tries to make his life miserable, with the intention of making him walk out of the house. He repeatedly foils her plans and comes out on top. Ultimately towards the end he smashes her ego and wins her heart over and she welcomes him into the family.
