Pandit Jasraj ranks very high amongst the few youngsters who are fast approaching the front line in the field of classical music. Coming from a family traditionally known to belong to the Mewati School of music, he was born in in the year 1930 at the Hssat in the Punjab. His father, the late Pandit Motiram was a noted musician, but the credit for grooming young Jasraj to the present form goes to his eldest brother Pandit Maniram. Quiet and gentle in nature, he has evolved a style in keeping with this disposition; he believes in laying more stress on emotional contents than adorning his performances with frills of acrobatics of the vocal chords. His voice, deliciously sweet and mellow, is very often heard from various stations of the All India Radio and his frequent appearances at all important music conferences have won for him a very large following throughout the nation.

SIDE 1: Raga Nat-Bhairav
Bhairav is a morning melody with a serene and sublime mood. The mixing of “nata” with the main melody brings about a very happy change in the rendered, “Nata” is not an independent raga but is a note-phrase which is grafted skillfully on various ragas to produce charming effects of delightful varieties. On this side, the maestro evolves a beautiful euphonious struct out of this combination of Nata and Bhairav bringing out in glaring vividness all the salient features of the raga. For this, he offers two compositions – one slow moving, confined to a twelve-beat rhythm called Ektal and the other a fast one in Teental consisting of 16 beats (matras).
SIDE 2: Raga Shudha – Bairadi, Raga Hansdhwani
On this side are offered two classical pieces. The first “Shudh-Bairadee’ is an uncommon raga. In structure, it sounds like an admisture of ‘Deskar and Bhatiyar’ which are morning melodies. Shudh Bairadee however is supposed to be rendered during the early hours of evening. The composition, rendered so attractively by the artiste, has a charming lilst and is confined to Teental.
The second composition is in Raga Hansdwani which is originally a South Indian raga but has been very successfully adapted to the North Indian style by several artistes. It is rendered in the first part of the night and has a mood of quiet tranquility and divine peace (Shanta-Rasa). The exposition in Teental by Pandit Jasraj creates an atmosphere in keeping with this character of the Raga.
