Born on 24th November, 1931 in a family which was known for its traditional custom and cultural heritage. At a tender age Santosh Banerjee started taking lession in Sitar from the famous sitar artist of yesteryears Shri Aparesh Chatterjee. Later became the “Ganda Bandh’” disciple of the Legendary Veenkar and torch bearer of “Rampur Senia Gharana. Ustad Md. Daveer Khan Saheb. His association with Ustad Daveer Khan Saheb continued for nearly 25 years till the demise of the Ustad. From the Ustad, Santosh Banerjee learnt Dhrupad-Dhamar, typical “Dhrupadi Baaz” on Sitar and also the rare instrument “Surbahar”. Today Santosh Banerjee is the only artiste who sincerely performs the traditional “baaz” (style of playing) on Surbahar.
Tuneful alap, vistar and variation in the rhythmic pattern are the salient feature of his performance. His performance can be marked as the perfect blend of emotion, romanticism maintaining the traditional purity of Khandahar Vani. Santosh Banerjee was the Reader and Head of the Department of instrumental Music, Rabindra Bharati University and took part in many Lecture seminars in many Universities in India and abroad. He has been participating in many prestigious music concerts in India since 1955 and performed in the National Programme of Music of All India Radio and Doordarshan. Apart from the successful concerts at home, he has extensively toured European Countries such as France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland etc. His performances on both the Sitar and Surbahar have been widely appreciated by music lovers and critics. In spite of his very busy schedule as a renowned performer, Santosh Banerjee had craved out time to teach & rear up a number of disciples who are carrying forward the torch of the Rampur Senia Gharana.
