Raga - Bilaskhani Todi This is a morning melody, an attractive form of the Todi Raga. Tansen's son Bilaskhan is given the credit for the discovery of this Raga and hence the label Bilaskhani.' The speciality of Bilaskhani Todi is that it uses all the notes of Raga Bhairavi in it and yet brings out the special Todi element in it. The ascent uses five notes only-Sa, Re komal, Ga komal, Pa, and Dha komal (i.e. First, Second Flattened, Third flattened, Fifth, and Sixth flattened notes) The descent uses komal Ni And Ma in addition to these notes (i.e. Flattened seventh and Natural Fourth notes) The slow composition in this Raga has been set to Ektaal, a rhythmic cycle of 12 beats and the faster one to Teentaal a taal of 16 beats. Disciplined exposition of the Raga, i.e. note by note development through imaginative and aesthetic phrasing coupled with poise and grace are the highlights of Jayateerth's singing here. The powerful and intricate taan patterns employed in both the renditions are clear, ornate and rhythmically pleasing. They hold a mirror to Jayateerth's potential as an
Raga - Abhogi Kanada This is a pentatonic melody of South Indian origin, now popular in North Indian Music as well. It omits the Fifth and Seventh notes (Pa and Ni) totally while the Third one is used in a flattened form (komal Ga). The Raga has a pleading, serene mood in it and Jayateertha has succeeded in bringing it out effectively. The Vilambit composition is set to Teentaal and the Drut one to Ektaal. Raga Basant Basant means the season of spring. This melody from the North Indian repertoire is usually sung at the time of spring but even in other seasons it heralds the pleasant mood of spring. It is developed mainly in the upper register and uses many leaps to the Sa (The Tonic Note) in the upper octave. All the seven notes of the scale are used with the fourth being sharpened and the sixth flattened. Occasional use of the natural Fourth (Shudha Ma) brings in a very pleasing mood. A delightful and enjoyable rendering by Jayateerth!
