Raghunandan Panashikar has presented an assortment of four different types of classical compositions here. The first one in Raga Hamsadhwani (29.05), is in essence, a praise of Lord Ganesh. This Raga, originating from South India, is a pentatonic structure using Sa, Re, Ga, Pa and Ni, (The first, second, third, fifth and seventh notes in their natural form.) It runs into four stanzas. Keeping in mind, the importance of words, all the stanzas are sung in the beginning without much embellishment. Then Raghunandan goes on to unfold the structure of the Raga through Aalaps, Bol-aalaps,Sargam,Taans and such other ornamentations. After having establised the Raga in medium tempo, he begins a 'Tarana'; a composition of meaningless words. Though meaningless, they carry the mood with them and the rhythmic variations and patterns add a lot of interest in the rendition. Next comes a lighter composition a Thumri in Mishra Kafi (13.10). Compared to most other Thumris, which do not strictly adhere to the rules of the Raga, this one is different. It is more disciplined like a Bandish composition. The present Thumri is often heard in Kathak dance performances. The medium fast tempo provides good scope for emotive expressions. The concluding piece is a Bandish in Raga Basant - Bahar (15.12). It is a combination of two independent Ragas : Basant and Bahar, with many contrasting features in them. For instance if 'Re' is komal in Basant, it is Shuddha in Bahar; the same is true of Ga;Shuddha is Basant, komal in Bahar. The notes Ma, Dha and Ni also have similar contrasts. A singer needs equal mastery of both the Ragas to make them blend into one another and to create a Raga structure which has an individual character. Raghunandan has successfully achieved this and brought out the atmosphere of the season of spring : the characte character of the Raga!
