Rhythm or taal constitutes a very important part of Hindusthani Classical Music. The tonal variations of the percussion instrument at different tempo change the colour of music to a great extent. The percussionist therefore plays a very significant role in every concert making it lively and enjoyable for the listeners. Such a percussionist is Samar Saha, who with his matured and sensitive tabla playing contributes immensely to the performance both as a soloist and as an accompanist. Born in a musical family of Kolkata, he was initially trained by his father Sri Sudhanshu Bhusan Saha and his elder brother, Sri Tarak Saha. Later he received extensive taalim from Sri Sachchidananda Goswami and from Sri Krishna Kumar Ganguly (Natu babu) of the Benaras Gharana. Gifted with a rare musicality, which has been harnessed by rigorous training. Samar Saha is known for the magical touch of his fingers. He has played with some of the stalwarts of Indian Music including Mallikarjun Mansoor, Bhimsen Joshi, Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Balmurali Krishna, Amjad Ali Khan and has participated in all the prestigious music festivals and conferences in India. He also features regularly in concerts outside India and has played at the festival of India USA as well as the Golden Jubilee Celebration of Indian Independence at the Carneigie Hall amongst others. A regular performer of All India Radio and Doordarshan, he has been a full-time faculty member of ITC Sangeet Research Academy, almost since its inception.
