John, son of Zebedee and brother of James, was not only his eponym but the eal of John Haynes Holmes (see p.223). Even as John was the only apostle who d not flee or deny Jesus when the Nazarene was arrested (john 18. 15-16). Holmes d not get disillusioned with Gandhian principles even when Gandhi himself wondered if the partition of India was his personal failure. He remained steadfast and loyal to the memory and eals of Gandhi after the Assassination and right till his own last day. If Gandhi was Jesus, Holmes was his John.
