Pandit Bhimsen Joshi is a maestro who has few rivals in
Hindustani music. At his best, the Kirana veteran is almost unsurpassed in
Khayal singing.

Panditji’s is a personality-bound gayaki. It shows itself
with equal brilliance in Khayal, tarana, thumri or devotionals.

Listening to this gem of a disc, connoisseurs will be moved
by the magnificence of Sur Malhar and Marwa Shri, the latter raga – his own
innovation. Both the themes are live, sprightly, ornamental yet virile. Each
unfolds a sound-picture that exudes a baroque style dignity and grandeur
secured through steady progression and precise accentuation of its salient
notes in the slow movement. A variety of cascading “taans” lends an evocative
quality to the “drut” singing.

This is a sub-melody of the celebrated raga Malhar and is
credited to the eminent musician-saint Surdas. Also known as Surdasi Malhar it
is rendered in the second quarter of the night. In some gharanas it is rendered
towards midday.
