This is the fourth L.P. record by Bhimsen Joshi who is
probably the most promising and talented amongst the younger set of classical
singers today.
A disciple of the late Sawai Gandharva, an eminent
musician of his time, Bhimsen Joshi took his early training at Gwalior, Lucknow
and Rampur from different teachers and later became one of the ablest exponents
of the Kirana School of Music. This gifted artiste’s biggest asset is his voice
that has an amazing range and flexibility which makes it possible for him to
take “taans” or movements from note to note at a terrific speed.
Bhimsen Joshi has been a regular broadcaster from
the network of All India Radio stations since 1941 and today he is one of the
most sought-after vocalists at most representative music conferences.
The music on this disc
Side One – Raga Miyan Ki Todi
Daiyya Baat Durbar; Langar Kankariye
Believed to have been evolved by Miyan Tansen, the
most illustrious name in Indian Classical music, this Raga is named after him
and hence is known as “Miyan-Ki-Todi”. It is rendered only in mornings. Full of
urge and appeal, a pathetic tinge runs through its entire exposition. The
maestro develops the theme with a composition confined to a rhythm of Twelve
beats, known as Ektaal. The elaborate treatment accorded to it reveals the vast
and expansive character of the Raga. After building up a very attractive
euphonious structure with the help of copious Alaps, and phrases gradually
becoming longer and more intricate, he switches over to a vast composition
confined to Teental (16 beats). The artiste gives a superb exhibition of his
tremendous breath holding power and matches workmanship by taking Taans
covering full three octaves at speeds that leave the listeners entranced and
bewildered.
Side Two – Raga Puriya Dhanashri & Thumri
This side has two items – one serious and the other
in a lighter vein. The first one is in Raga Puriya Dhanashri which is an
evening melody and has a quiet serene mood. The Artiste expounds the Raga in a
leisurely style with a composition confined to a rhythm of Ten beats, known as
Jhaptaal. He winds up with a few fast and intricate Taan patterns that
demonstrate in full measure the vast range and subtle flexibility of his voice.
The Thumri which succeeds the Raga exposition is
replete with rich romance and grace. In keeping with the transient and
ephemeral mood, the artiste builds up an atmosphere that carries the listeners
to celestial heights.
