Pandit Bhimsen Joshi’s achievements, at 58, are truly
astounding. Few vocalists in North India’s classical tradition equal him in
point of sheer popularity and mass appeal.
Born in 1922, Bhimsen Joshi began his musical quest
when, as a teenager, he ran away from home in Karnataka State and wandered from
place to place all over North India in search of a “guru”. He was destined to
find one, in his own district – the celebrated Sawai Gandharva, the most
outstanding disciple of the great Abdul Karim Khan.
No guru perhaps could have wished for a better
student. So much so, that in time to come, young Bhimsen matured into what he
is today – one of the ablest exponents of the Kirana style – and something much
more. Thanks to his versatile genius, he has enriched it and continues to
enrich it.
The deeper dimensions of his evolving vocalism
reveal themselves in all their dignity and charm in this Long Play disc.
Strands from many contemporary styles of presentation are now found
inextricably woven into his musical fabric. Yet the fabric carrier its
unmistakable Kirana stamp. Only a maestro like Pandit Bhimsen Joshi can achieve
such a marvelous musical amalgam.
