THE MUSIC

 SIDE ONE: Raga Hansdhwani

Jai Maate Vilumbh Taj De

Ustad Amir Khan has sung raga Hansdwani, a popular raga of South India rendering it in a purely North Indian style. It is a pentatonic raga of the major scale in which the third and the sixth notes are absent: do re mi so ti do (Oct) ti so mi re ti (low) so (low) mi re.

Khan Sahib has started with a Khayal of slow rhythm of twelve beats called ektal, in a magnificent style in which intricate melodic patterns have been rendered delightfully; a very happy combination of the intellectual and the aesthetic. The solfa work have been done with wonderful ease and poise.

After the slow Khayal Khan Sahib has taken up a beautifully composed Tarana in a fast sixteen beats rhythm, the trital and has rendered some difficult but highly attractive Taans.

SIDE TWO: Raga Malkauns

Jin Ke Man Ram Biraje

This is a very old traditional melody of a pentatonic scale which runs like this: do mi (flat) fa la (flat) ti (flat). Ustad Amir Khan has rendered the raga in a very serene and solemn style lending the melody a devotional complexion. The unusual stress on the leading note (which is flat) adds to the grave beauty of the raga. The conception and development of the raga, as we have got it from Amir Khan, are far from what is usually heard, and he has portrayed the raga in his own inimitable style with solfas executed with fantastic elasticity.

He has chosen his favorite tala Jhoomra, the very slow fourteen-beats rhythm for the first song and then towards the end he has passed on to a fast sixteen-beats rhythm the trital. The concluding composition is a very crisp one in which the artiste has taken up difficult Tan combinations.
