Ustad Amir Khan commands a unique position in the field of
North Indian classical vocal music. Born and brough up on the best of
traditional atmosphere and himself having carried on a deep research in the
practical region of his art, Ustad Amir Khan has reached a stage of achievement
which is unparallel in contemporary history of Indian Classical music.
SIDE ONE:
Raga Megh: Basha Ritu Aai
Ustad Amir Khan has sung Raga Megh. This melody
according to Indian tradition has an association with the rainy season – Megh
meaning cloud. The melody is in a pentatonic scale I which the mediant and
submediant are absent and the leading note is flat. Ustad Amir Khan has started
with a slow Khayal in a very slow rhythm of fourteen beats called Jhoomra
(3/4/3/4) and then he has taken up a Tarana in a fast tempo in a rhythm of
twelve beats called Ektaal (2x6)
A tarana is a composition for vocal music in which the
words used have no meaning but have a phonetic import that helps form the body
of the composition. In both these songs Amir Khan Sahib has indulged in tan
improvisations that are surprisingly beautiful for their rhythmic as well as
melodic conception.
SIDE TWO:
Raga Lalit: Jahan Jaage Raat
Raga Lalit: Jogiya More Ghar Aaye
This is an early morning raga in which the sentiment
of the parting night and the same of the day-dawning are simultaneously felt.
The emotional richness and depth of Amir Khan’s voice and above all the
dignified style of rendering the raga have made the song a piece of musical
excellence.

The rhythm is Khan Sahib’s favorite very slow Jhoorma,
a tala of fourteen beats 3/4/3/4. The raga has two subdominats, natural and
sharp. The supertonic and submediant are flat and the mediant and leading note
are sharp. The scale is like this ti re (flat) mi fa la (flat) fa (sharp) fa,
mi fa (sharp) la (flat) ti so (oct.) ti la (flat) fa (sharp fa mi, fa (sharp)
mi re (flat) do.
Khan Sahib has sung a fast composition in the same
raga at the end in trital, the common sixteen beats rhythm 4/4/4/4.
