ABOUT THE ARTISTES:

Two of the most illustrious artistes in the realm of Indian Classical Music and their great artistry are the highlights of this new Long Play disc.

Pandit Ravi Shankar, known for his master-craft in sitar-playing, is perhaps the most outstanding Indian classical musician known all over the world. He won the distinction of being acclaimed ‘Artiste of the year’ in the far away United States of America two years ago. The Indian Government, in recognition of his meritorious services in the propagation of Indian Music conferred on him the title of ‘Padma Bhushan.’ This Long Play record is one more addition to his numerous recordings and bears the unique stamp of his matchless and superb style and proficiency on the sitar.

The other name associated with the great performance on this record is that of Ustad Ahmedjan Thirakhwa. He, too, was awarded recently the title of ‘Padma Bhushan’ by the Indian Government. 90 not out! This table wizard is still going strong at the age of 90. When he performs, the years drop, and the listeners are held spellbound by the vigour and dexterity of his playing. It was the sound “Thirakh-Thirakh” which Ahmedjan produced so enchantingly on table, that won him the sobriquet of “Thirakhwa”. He is considered today the greatest living percussionist in the whole of India.

SIDE ONE

This side has two items. The first is a very scintillating table-sole by Maestro Ahmedjan Thirakhwa, Teentala – consisting of 16 beats to a cycle is normally played by every table player. But the same when rendered by Ahmedjan takes a unique form in design and execution. Ahmedjan’s innumerable followers will like to preserve this masterly performance by the greate artiste.

Then follows a memorable sitar-ply by Pandit Ravi Shankar. He has chosen Raga Behag, an early night melody with a mood of romantic appeal and urge. He offers on this side a brilliant exposition of the Raga in ‘Alap’ and ‘Jod’ forms. His ingenuity in playing in the Mandra-Saptak (Lower octave) producing sonorously rich notes will regale listeners.

 SIDE TWO

On this side are presented both the veterans performing together. Pandit Ravi Shankar plays an exhilarating Gat in the same Raga Behag. The rhythm in medium speed (Madhya-Laya) consists of 16 beats to a cycle – Teentala,  and the great artistry of Maestro Ravi Shankar is further enriched by the engrossing accompaniment provide by Ustad Ahmedjan Thirakhwa in an arresting style.
