citadel of India. It can be said without exaggeration that he is one of the few
vocalists to have acquired an audience ever ready and willing to jostle its way
into the concert hall any time he may choose to sing.

 Endowed  with a marvelous voice, Pandit Jasraj
has the rare ability to control its reach and richness with a mind and manner
essentially his own. The charm of his expression, as also the felicity with
which he shapes his ideas and intuitions, marks him out as an executant par
excellence in the traditional domain.

 Pandit Jasraj is equally at home with simple and
complex ragas. The intricate and rarely heard ragas presented in this disc in
their creative revealations, reveal one more shining facet of his musical
personality

THE MUSIC

 SIDE ONE: Raga Nat Narayan

 This is a night melody derived from the Khamaj “that”.
Some musicologists give this melody the status of a “janaka raga”. The raga
takes the second (rishabha) and fifth (Panchama) as its “vadi” and “samvadi
swaras”, respectively.

 SIDE TWO:

 (A)  Raga Khamaj Bahar: This night melody also
derived from the Khamaj “that” presents a subtle blend of two well-known ragas,
namely, Khamaj and Bahar. The melody takes the fifth (Panchama) and first
(shadja) as its “vadi” and “samvadi swaras”.

(B)  Raga Nagad-Dhwani Kanhra: This is a very rare
melody derived from the Kafi “that”. Rendered during night it makes use of the
fifth (Panchama) as “vadi” and the first (shadja) as samvadi).
