The Gramophone Company of India Limited has great pleasure to introduce an eminent vocalist from Gujarat through this disc.
Pandit Rasiklal Andharia is now a familiar name to connoisseurs of Hindustani music. A regular broadcaster from various stations of All India Radio, he is also a leading participating artiste in all “sangeet sammelans” held in different parts of the country.
Born at Bhavnagar, in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat state, in 1931, he was encouraged to take to music by his father Govindji Bhai. He took initial lessons in classical singing from his elder brother, Pandit Babulal Andharia, a professor of music at Rajkot.
Rasiklal Andharia is basically a self-taught vocalist. He has, by sher dint of hard, diligent “Riyaz”, modelled his style after the Kirana “Gharana” of which he has now made his mark as an able exponent.
Gifted with a rich, sonorous voice, he reveals a judicious blending of melodic and rhythmic virtues His “vilambit” and “drut” khayals shimmer with the aesthetic felicities that distinguished the “gayaki” of the great Ustad Amir Khan, with its emotional depth and enduring appeal.
THE MUSIC
SIDE ONE: Raga Lalit: This is one of the most beautiful early morning ragas. It omits “pancham” from its “saptak” and takes “madhyam” and shadja” respectively as its “vadi” and “samvadi swaras”. The use of “tivra madhyam” along with shudh “madhyam” gives this melody its distinctive aesthetic charm.
The artiste presents the “raga” first in “vilambit”, set to “ektaal” (12 “matras”), followed by “drut” in “tritaal” (16 “matras”)
SIDE TWO: Raga Gorakh Kalyan: This is a rare but sensitive melody rendered in the first quarter of the night. It omits “Gandhar” and “pancham” from its “aroha”, while a skilful use of “pancham” finds place in “avaroha”. “Nishad” is “komal” in both “aroha” and “avaroha”. The “vadi” and “samvadi”” “swaras”, respectively , are “madhyam” and “shadja”.
The “raga” is presented here in first in “vilambit” in “ektaal” and then in “drut tritaal”.
