V. G. Jog

Shri V. G. Jog who is already very much introduced to the world of Indian music as well as to the Gramophone records listeners as a violinist, has again come out with his new presentations in an L. P. after his recent American Tour. The violin recitals of Shri Jog in this number reflects the increasing dignity of a master player and a more disciplined thought process helping to bring out the ever-new musical treasure that takes birth and dwells within.

SIDE ONE: RAGA SHYAM KALYAN

Shri Jog has started with a short free alap without entering into the dilatory technical elaboration and has then taken up this slow gat (composition). The structure of the raga Shyam Kalyan is like this: P N S R M P N S, N D P, G M R P M G M R S.

Shyam Kalyan is a raga of the Kalyan group performed in the evening. Shri Jog has very efficiently delineated the features of the melody as found in the exposition of different Gharanas (Schools). His extemporization is as artistic as full of imagination; the rhythmic patterns have been very effectively dove-tailed with the rage phrases and every concluding phrase of a movement bears the stamp of unique confidence and accuracy.

The fast ‘gat’ in Trital is started in the same breath as it were with the slow composition. Difficult phrases have been beautifully and briskly rendered and the ‘gat’ has been concluded after some Jhala filigree work.

Afaque Hossain Khan’s tabla accompaniment has amply added to the charm of this item. Shri Jog’s tolerance, allowing Afaque Hossain to indulge in occasional individual playing is praiseworthy.

SIDE TWO: 1. RAGS DES: 2. DHUN

The structure of the raga is like this N S R M P N S, N D P D M G R G S. Shri V. G. Jog has started with a very short alap by way of introduction and has taken up a slow gat. He has followed the technique of vocal music in portraying the raga Des which is known as one of the leading sweet sounding ragas of the evening. In Shri Jog’s playing the Intellectual has combined with the Aesthetic. The fast gat follows heel to heel with the slow one. Jhala attempts have been extremely interesting and the piano and forte variations very worthwhile.

Shri Jog’s next item in this side is Folk tune. He has started with a common folk melody of Bengal but has cleverly blended it with the Dhuns of other regions. The result has been fantastic. The item is full of pleasant variations.

Tabla accompaniment by Shri Afaque Hossain Khan has been done in a commendable spirit of cooperation and sense of proportion. The rhythm is Kaharwa, a quick eight beats rhythm.
