Encouraged by the most enthusiastic reception accorded to the previous LP disc of these gifted artistes, we are now offering this one, containing Thumris rendered by Nirmala Devi and Lakshmi Shankar in duet and solo. Each side has a duet performance followed by a solo by one of the artistes.

Enriched by the experience of the previous recordings, the artistes display a remarkable proficiency in presenting these new items. Khan Saheb Abdul Rehman Khan, their teacher, deserves special mention for the assiduous care with which he rehearsed the artistes and supervised these recordings, so admirably composed by him.

Enchanting expression, lilting gait and fascinating Taan and Murki patterns form the highlights of this unique disc.

NIRMALA DEVI

Born at Benares, the holy city on the ganges, Nirmala was initiated in the art of singing by her father. In quest of a career she came to Bombay and before long, had several leading roles in Hindi films. Her acting ability and her musical talent brought her fame and kudos from film fans all over India.

Music gradually acquired a greater significance in her life and under the training of Khan Saheb Abdul Rehman Khan, this singer with a thin, silvery voice, having a range covering full three Octaves and immense flexibility, acquired a unique style of her own and now ranks amongst one of the finest Thumri singers of India.

LAKSHIM SHANKAR

Hailing from the South, Smt. Lakshmi Shankar began to learn Bharat Natyam and Carnatic music at an early age. Later she joined the Uday Shankar India Culture Center at Almora as a member of the touring group and the teaching staff.

She, however, gave up her promising dancing career to study vocal Hindustani music under Ustad Abdul Rehman Khan of Patiala Gharana. Under the guidance of Prof. B. R. Deodhar she graduated in music acquiring “Sangeet Visharad”. She is currently associated with and is receiving guidance from Pandit Ravi Shankar.

Gifted with a sonorously rich voice, stretching over an amazingly wide range, Lakshmi Shankar has sung in several Indian languages for films, ballets and stage presentations.

She has travelled extensively in India and abroad and has built up a vast following through her arresting style of presenting Khayals, Thumris and Bhajans.
