Mogubai Kurdikar

Born on 15th July 1904, at Kurdi, in the fascinating Goa territory, Mogubai Kurdikar is one of the surviving musical stalwarts whose status and standard of performance are singularly high. Born a musical prodigy Smt. Mogubai, even in her teens made such a great impression on the late Ustad Gayan Samrat Alladiay Khansahib of Kolhapur that he volunteered to train her up in the complex art of the Atroli (Jaipur) – Gharana. It was a great ordeal against heavy odds for Mogubai to achieve what was her life’s ambition. She had the good fortune to receive training – arduous and long though it was – from the great Ustad and also from his equally illustrious brother late Khansahib Hyder Khan.

As an artiste, she is a purist to the core, as uncompromising as the old masters usually are. She excels in the art of presenting a Khayal in all its rich colors and splendour She is a repository of many an out-of-the-way Ragas and artistic compositions. Adept in the art of complex and picturesque taan patterns, she specializes in ‘Bol-Taans’ and ‘Layakari’ – the artistic excellence of which can hardly be equaled by any one in the contemporary art.

Unlike many other women performers of her times, she is a teacher of rare competence and has trained up a number of vocalists who occupy places of distinction in the domain of music – to name a few Smt. Kamal Tambe, Shri Wamanrao Deshpande, Smt. Kausalya Manjeshwar and lat but not the least her own daughter Smt. Kishor Amonkar who is a musical phenomenon and an assurance to the posterity for the continuance of the great tradition of the Atroli Gharana. Smt. Mogubai hopes to devote her time in teaching and thereby help dispel the fears of dismal days of fast decaying traditions which are a great heritage of India and which required centuries of musicianship to build.

The Govt. Of India has rightly conferred on her, the Sangeet Natak Akademy Award for proficiency in Hindustani classical vocal music, this year – 1969.
