A master of realistic fiction, he is best known for two long novels, War and Peace and Anna Karenina. His first literary success came in his twenties with his semi-autobiographical trilogy of novels, Childhood, Boyhood and Youth and Sevastopol Sketches, based on his experiences in the Crimean War. Over the years, he wrote a few more novels, several novellas and many short stories, plays and essays. He is best known for the realistic portrayal of the Russian society in which he lived.
