Uttar Pradesh, for many centuries now, has enshrined India’s musical heritage. Through its innumerable craftsman and master musicians, stately patrons and scholars, music has enriched within itself in quality and content over the course of time. It has indeed been a long course; from Swami Haridas and Miya Tansen to Mohammed Shah ‘Rangeele’ and Wajid Ali Shah; from Pandit Bhatkhande and Bindadin Maharaj to Siddheshwari Devi and Begum Akhtar; with music flourishing at each turn, branching out into varied styles.

Thumri, Kajri, Hori and Dadra are such varied styles of the ‘Purab that came into vogue during the Moghul Period and have made a permanent mark on the connoisseur. Essentially a deviation of the Khayal, the Thumri emphasizes upon the Bhav (expression) and the Rasa (feelings), rather than the development of the Raga.

On this album Shobha Gurtu offers a variety of repertoire including Thumri, Kajri, Dadra and Hori. In each title Shobhaji enlivens a different ‘Nayika’, bringing out the woman in her to its fullest. Her sonorous voice coupled with vivid imagination and delicate nuances creates a warm sensous atmosphere that leaves the listener spellbound.  While ‘Radha Nandkunwar Samjhave’ and ‘Aanchra Chodo Kanhai drip with ‘Shringar Rasa’, the Jogia based ‘Sakhiri Mora Maike Mein Jiya Ghabraye’ impersonates the ‘Virah Rasa’ to its very core, truly reflecting upon the maturity Shobhaji has attained in her art. Today Shobhaji is at her creative peak and has many a brilliant composition to her credit ‘Patjhad Aayee Sakhiyan’ is one of them.

Though she has had her musical training from eminent Ustads like Nathan Khan and Gamman Khan, her silent admiration towards the legendary Begum Akhtar is evincive in her majestic ‘gayaki’.
