Pandit Jasraj

An exponent of the Mewati tradition which originated with the court musicians of the former princely states of Jodhpur and Bhopal, Pandit Jasraj has enriched his inheritance with a sweet and mellifluous voice, which is his natural endowment, and a prodigious and rigorous discipline, which is his act of will.

It was his eldest brother, Pandit Motiram, who was Pandit Jasraj’s Guru, in the true sense of that word, and who imparted to the young aspirant the distinctive “Kan Gayaki” style of the Mewati tradition.  To this assiduous schooling, Pandit Jasraj adds a native imagination, sensitivity, and spontaneity.

The unhurried unfolding of his alap, the tapestry of his bol-taan, his playful sargam, and the architecture of his taan patterns, make of Pandit Jasraj one of the most felicitous performers of recent times. If his classical music is engrossing, his devotional music makes the listener God-intoxicated.

A regular broadcaster from various stations of All-India Radio, Pandit Jasraj is also a much sought-after performer at all important soirees held in the country from time to time.

Zakir Hussain

If fame has come early to Zakir Hussain, it is not that it has come sooner than he deserved. The son of the illustrious Ustad Alla Rakkha, rhythm dwells in Zakir’s very being. To his precocity, Zakir adds boundless energy and an engaging verve, so that the Tabla, in his hands, takes on the character of a cosmic drum.

Now an instructor in the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Francisco, Zakir has given Tabla accompaniment to every major artiste from India, and has also played with many leading Jazz groups in the West.
