Malini Rajurkar with Pandit Vasant Achrekar on the Tabla This is a memorable recording of a private concert in Mumbai, about thirty years ago. It has been restored with due care, to bring to our listeners, the charm of Pandita Malini Rajurkar's singing and the enjoyment of Vasant Achrekar's Tabla. This recording has been specially released to commemorate the birth anniversary of Vasant Achrekar. LateVasant Achrekar was the favourite accompanist of many eminent musicians. His clean, crisp and powerful playing was the special attraction of many concerts; this is one of them. Listeners should note that this is not a studio recording; we have recovered whatever was presentable. As such, there might be sudden breaks. Please remember that these were there in the original recording. Nevertheless, the quality of available material is certainly that which brings you the flavour and ambience of the live concert. This recording has been made available through the good offices of Shri. Atul and Subhash Phanse, in whose house the concert was held & also to the son of Vasant Achrekar, Shri. Suresh Achrekar, who is striving to keep his father's memory alive. Tilak Kamod: This also is a pleasant and serene night melody. There is a slower composition (with an unexpected break) followed by a Tarana, a composition made with meaningless words. Maru Bihag : This is followed by a short and speedier composition in Maru Bihag. Note that it is not incomplete; only this portion could be recovered from the original recording, but has been retained for its freshness and crispness. Maru Bihag is a variety of Bihag, popular on account of its pleasant nature and the mood has been effectively brought out here. Raga Chhayanat : This is a night melody with a pleasant mood. Only the speedier composition has been included here. The volley of powerful taans and the rhythmic complexities in them are specially noticeable. Raga Khamaj: The first piece here is a composition in Punjabi language, a Tappa. The short, speedy and complex taans in it are its characteristic feature. Coupled with it are the up and down swings of different notes. This genre is believed to have its roots in the Northwestern provinces of India and has been conceived and popularized by Miyan Shouri, a singer from Punjab. The next composition is a Bandish ki Thumri, i.e. a lighter love song composed in the fashion of a traditional composition in Khayal. Notice how the application of voice changes with the genre.
