Desirable Daughters is both a portrait of a traditional Indian Brahmin family and a contemporary story of an American woman who has broken with customs but still remains tied to her native country. Tara is firmly established in San Francisco with an ex-husband, a teenage son, and a balding red bearded Hungarian Buddhist lover who is a contractor, yoga teacher and former biker. She is distanced from her family’s legacy until events cause her to examine her tenuous relationship with her homeland and her two sisters. She is drawn back by a young stranger, who becomes the centre of a mystery that unfolds in this compelling novel. It creates both intrigue and suspense but also initiates a quest for identity. Bharati Mukherjee is the author of five novels, two non-fiction books and two collection of short stories, including The Middleman and Other Stories, for which she won the national Book Critics Award.
