Description

Dedicated to our grandfather Nadikerianda Chinnappa (whom we, his grandchildren, affectionately call `Dadappayya’) and to our ancestors, whose feet we touch with reverence. Dadappayya, we have now completed the translation of the Pattole Palame, which you started eighty years ago. Nadikerianda Chinnappa took it upon himself to compile and publish the Pattole Palaem, a collection of Kodava folklore. Considering the times and the location of Kodagu, a region that had little contact with us to have single – handedly compiled and published a book of this nature in the early 1900’s. The University of Mysore called it one of the earliest extensive collections of the folklore of a community in any Indian language. As part of his duties as a police officer, Mr. Chinnappa travelled all over Kodagu on horseback, at a time when there were neither proper roads nor convenient modes of transport. He was fascinated by the wealth of folksongs in the region. He feared that the songs and traditions that had been handled orally down the degenerations would eventually be distorted or forgotten as a result of the rapid changes that were taking place at the dawn of the twentieth century.
